The Nanjing Footbridge was designed in close cooperation between the architect Christian Kerez and the structural designer Joseph Schwartz from the very beginning.

It is an important characteristic of the design that all the structural elements are walkable and in this sense part of the promenade. During the developing process, several promenades were combined in space, and finally, three main promenades were chosen, guided by economic criteria.
